Credit Union Awards $7,500 in Scholarships
(CHARLESTON, S.C.) – May 31, 2012 – South Carolina Federal Credit Union awarded $7,500 in scholarship prizes to three students. The winners include:
• Shira Cohen received the 1st Place prize of $4,000. Cohen attends Ashley Hall High School in Charleston and plans to attend Princeton University
• Leah Snipe received the 2nd Place prize of $2,500. Snipe resides on Johns Island and currently attends Wofford College.
• Nathan Smith received the 3rd Place prize of $1,000. Smith attends Stratford High School in Goose Creek and plans to attend the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University.
“This is the second year we’ve conducted this competition, and we had a surplus of qualified applicants,” said Scott Woods, President & CEO, South Carolina Federal Credit Union. These three winners are to be commended on their exceptional work, for pursuing higher education and for their commitment to helping others. ”
More than100 students applied earlier this year and the top three students were selected by both internal and external judges.
Candidates were required to submit an application, letter of recommendation, transcript and written or video essay. In the essay students shared how the credit union’s philosophy of “People Helping People” impacted their lives.
