There is a very specific reason I would like to go into the field of Psychology. I have seen and experienced instances where therapy, for those with Mental health issues, brought young lives from places of wanting to harm one’s self to places of wanting to help other grow. On the other hand, I have seen close friends and loved ones miss the chance to get that help and some of them are no longer with us. I want to be a Therapist so that I can try my best help young people understand their own minds and learn how to overcome what they believe is holding them back. Mental health has been a prominent subject of discussion in my life sense age ten. It was then that I was diagnosed with ADHD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). I was put on ADHD medication and then given hardly any more council about what exactly those new labels meant. In high school I decided to quit medication and learn that ways that were best for me study to do just as well as everyone else. Not everyone with ADHD needs medication. For me, no medication meant a clearer mind and just a little extra studying. While I learned to be self-sufficient in academics, I still needed some direction when it came to accept and understanding my Anxiety. A very long story short, I reached a low point in my mental health and started going to therapy. The result was I was able to learn how I handle my anxiety. However, it was that road to recovery that inspired me to choose psychology as my major. I my dream is to work with children and adolescents in the community to assist them with their own mental health. Helping youth who often feel bullied or unstable would increase safely in our schools and in our homes. Being a therapist would mean I get to truly make a positive difference in the lives of the next generation to run this great city. Another dream of mine is to simply spread awareness of the importance of Mental health. It my personal belief that everyone should go to therapy. Or, at the very least have someone to talk to that they trust. Even before I am done with my schooling, if I can be that trusted person for someone that would be enough for me to know I am striving towards the right carrier.
