About Us

South Carolina Federal Credit Union offers a full range of financial services including savings and investments, checking, credit cards and loans. We offer a personable environment, with convenience unsurpassed in our area. Our team's entire focus is on personally providing the products, services, tools and forward thinking that allow members to focus on making their lives more satisfying.

Credit union membership is ownership. We are not-for-profit and exist only for the financial benefit of our membership. As a result, South Carolina Federal is able to pay competitive dividends on savings and offer attractive interest rates on loans. Find out the Credit Union Difference.

As a federally chartered credit union, organized under strict regulatory laws, our operations are monitored and enforced by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the U.S. Government. Your shares are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), an arm of National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Credit union members in South Carolina never have to worry about the safety of their savings deposits. All 81 credit unions in South Carolina carry federal insurance from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) covering member deposits up to at least $250,000.

History

South Carolina Federal Credit Union has provided convenient financial services since its founding in 1936. Fourteen naval shipyard workers contributed $5, for a total of $70. That small beginning sparked what is now one of the largest credit unions in the country, serving over 150,000 members.

  • 1936 - Chartered as Charleston Navy Yard Employees Federal Credit Union
  • 1960 - Changed name to Charleston Naval Shipyard (CNS) Federal Credit Union when membership was expanded to include Navy personnel working in the Navy Yard
  • 1965 - Opened at the Shipyard, becoming the first credit union in the state with our own facility
  • 1969 - Opened Naval Station branch
  • 1974 - Only credit union in South Carolina providing monthly statements and processing transactions with same-day receipts
  • 1979 - Opened a 5-story operations building at 2175 Credit Union Lane, in North Charleston
  • 1981 - Opened our first ATM. By 1984 there were 14 ATMs throughout the area
  • 1989 - Hurricane Hugo disrupted the lives of many members, the credit union forgave $83,000 in returned check fees and another $46,000 in service charges to assist those members in time of need
  • 1994 - Changed name to South Carolina Federal Credit Union to better represent service area
  • 2000 - Online Banking available to members free of charge
  • 2003 - Updated status to that of a community-chartered credit union, opening membership to all who live, work, and worship in Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley, Calhoun, Georgetown, Orangeburg and most of Lexington and Richland counties
  • 2009 - Opened new state-of-the-art operations center at 6265 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston

Board of Directors South Carolina Federal Credit Union is governed by a Board of Directors that establishes and reviews policy. Directors are credit union members, elected by the membership and serve without pay, each with one vote.

Supervisory Committee

The South Carolina Federal Supervisory Committee is responsible for determining that the credit union’s financial condition is accurately and fairly presented in our financial statements and that management procedures and practices are adequate to safeguard members' assets. The Committee is responsible for overseeing the credit union’s internal control systems and contracting for financial and specialty audits with the help of our internal auditors and our annual independent financial statement audit.

Volunteer Advisors

Volunteer Advisors contribute to decisions that determine credit union progress. In this role, advisors focus on the credit union philosophy and operations. They attend monthly board meetings and contribute on appointed committees.
